What are the Characteristics of Good Web Site Design?
Written by admin on August 24, 2008 – 2:38 pm -There are many different and often contradictory views and perceptions of the qualities that make for good Web site design. One also has to take into account current trends and popular styles in modern design, which can differ according to personal preferences.
Despite these variables there are some central characteristics of good site design that have emerged in the last few years, and which are generally perceived by pundits as being core features of good design. While design and creative layout remains an area dictated by personal taste and perception it is important to be aware of generally accepted characteristics in order to assess the comparative visual creativity of one’s own Web site.
A feature that is emphasized repeatedly by many designers is the tendency towards simplicity of design and structure of a Web site. Achieving simplicity of design however is not as easy as it might sound. The modern trend is towards a more minimalist interface and page layout, which facilitates ease of access to the site and usability features. One of the reasons for this trend is that as the number of Web sites proliferates at an even increasing rate, there is a need to create sites that have a clear and obvious message and aim.
Simplicity of layout is therefore a characteristic that is evident in some of the best Web sites around. Very often this refers to a simple one or two column structure. Pages are also read from top to bottom. The days of the complex and involved site structure that requires time to figure out in order to navigate are definitely outdated. A good example of the modern stylistic approach is a site like Protolize (Protolize.org).
One of the main design principles that many Webmasters have lived by in recent years was that it was wise to reduce the amount of scrolling necessary to view a page. However, the modern tendency is for a centered orientation in Web design, rather than the previous left aligned, fixed-width layouts. Many top modern sites have the content centered on the page, which often requires some scrolling. While excessive scrolling is certainly not a good design characteristic, the modern view is that some scrolling is acceptable when it is offset against the better use of white space and content that is situated around a central axis.
In line with the above, there is also a relatively new tendency to focus on the design of the content and not the page itself. In other words, there is less focus on designing a page background for instance and rather paying more attention given to the way that the content is presented on a Web page. This follows from the view that effective communication and not mere decoration should be the main focus of a good Web site.
As designer Phil Brisk states, designers often become focused on detail rather than on paying attention to the way that the content is presented, “With your ‘design’ head on, concentrating on crafting and perfecting style elements, it’s easy to forget to step back and see things through the eyes of your users.(http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/dont_decorate_communicate.cfm) He also makes the important point reflected in many modern successful Web sites that, while it is important to make use of eye-catching design elements to create flair and excitement on a site, “…these elements must always be relevant and appropriate, and not distract from a clear, coherent whole effect.” (http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/dont_decorate_communicate.cfm)
This statement encapsulates a central aspect of the modern trend in site design. In more practical terms this refers to aspects such as more open and less boxed-in page layouts as well as the use of color and visual effects to draw attention to the content rather than the aesthetics of the page. As another pundit states, “the focus is on making the site’s subject look good, rather than making the web designer look good”. (http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/current-style.cfm). In the light of these views, aspects such central content alignment become important as it focuses attention on the content, as well as providing a sense of balance and simplistic creative design. A good example of a site that takes this view to the point of minimalism is that of Garrett Dimon’s blog (GarrettDimon.com). This site is designed for maximum access to content.
There are many other design aspects that conform to the modern perception of a ‘good’ website that are worth mentioning. Navigation is conventionally situated on the left side of the page or on the topbar. The latest trend is to rather place navigational elements on the right side of the page. This may be a trend that is linked to the way that navigation in most Blogs function. Similarly, right side navigation also has the advantage of making the content more visible and prominent.
There are many other aspects such as color usage, which have tended to become more low key and less garish. In terms of font size, the general trend has been to move away from very small illegible font sizes to larger fonts to make online reading more user-friendly. All of these trends point towards the central factor in contemporary Web design; namely that content, and access to instant information are key factors in modern Web design.

Legal Marketing: How To Become A Celebrity In Your Own World
Written by admin on August 21, 2008 – 7:44 pm -These days it’s easier than ever to use the power of the web to take your business development to the next level. Between articles, social media and more the path to becoming a Microcelebrity is wide and clear for those who have the enthusiasm and dedication it takes to make an impact. I speak from experience. In less than six months time I used the strategies below to take myself from 20% of the Google links on the first page of a “Paula Black” search to 90%. What did it take? Strategy. Time. Commitment. Dedication.
The first step in this journey is simple: you must create a personal brand. Figure out what makes up YOUR personal brand. Not your firm, not your practice area…YOU. Look at your experience, expertise and talents and identify where you fit in… what are you an expert in?
Once you’ve identified your focus it’s time to start working on strategy. In creating the plan I identified four main strategies that best lead to microcelebrity:
Article Strategy Speaking Strategy Social Media and Blogging Strategy Writing A Book.
All four are powerful on their own, but when used all together they can catapult your visibility on the Internet and truly make you stand out from the crowd. Let’s start at number one.
1. Article Strategy
The main idea here is to write what you know. Give advice but leave the readers wanting more. Make sure your articles work together to represent YOU as a brand. Place them in article directories (such as this one), and keep them handy to share with clients and potential clients. Just make sure you keep on schedule… one article every few months won’t cut it! TIP: Make a list of 50 topics you are prepared to write about and let that be your guide. It will take less than 20 minutes of your time and be well worth it when you start writing.
2. Speaking Strategy
So where to speak? Anywhere from Bar events to Non-profits. It can be as simple as a basic speech or as in-depth as a half-day seminar. Just get out there and let your voice be heard. It will breathe life into your brand and allow you to establish a relationship with your audience. TIP: Use the content from your articles to form your speeches.
3. Social Media & Blogging
Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn… all wonderful ways to further your brand. But be careful when venturing into this new world of marketing. To be successful you MUST have a plan. Stay true to the personal brand you’ve developed and let your past content dictate what you post. Keep your focus. TIP: Make sure whatever you do is branded as much as possible. Be relevant (no one cares what you had for dinner!). Repetition is key.
4. Write A Book
Writing a book is a great way to up your credibility and invest in a true, long-term marketing tool. It’s not the cheapest option but the results you can reap will benefit your business development for years to come. The basics? Stay true to your brand, keep it short and write for your audience. TIP: Once you make the commitment, stay true to it. Schedule time in your day (or week) for writing and get your butt in the chair.
As I mentioned above, these strategies have worked in the past and will work again. But they won’t increase your visibility without a little hard work. You must truly dedicate yourself to the ideas presented and schedule the time to plan, think, write, speak and stay on track.
The ideas in this article have been excerpted from Paula Black’s E-book “Be A Celebrity in Your Own World… A strategy to increase your visibility and credibility.” If we’ve inspired you to get started and you would like a FREE copy of this E-book click here.

Logo Design – Few principles for making good logo
Written by admin on August 21, 2008 – 2:33 pm -Understanding how a logo functions, what it means and what it helps to make the business succeed must be considered before you create a logo design. Be aware that a logo is not just a symbol or a mark that you see, it simply reflects a brand through the use of shapes or images, vibrant colors and most specially, fancy fonts.
What are the principles on making your logo design effective?
A logo design should be eye catching and simple. It should be designed using simple color pattern and short text. There are also many types of logo design software. These are computer programs that are represented with a friendly user interface and help in generating logos according to the color and size specification of the business. It must be flexible enough to be used in different media like the Internet, TV, and print advertisement.
Logo designs can be created by the business owner using software or a hired professional. It promotes the business in the market, helps in attracting potential customers to the business, gives a unique identity to the business and also important to the business as the business name. A simple characteristics of successful logo is that it should be a representative of the organization and company
What makes a good logo great?
Some corporations use letters as part of their logo. Others use abstract shapes to communicate the same thing. The logo must clearly state the name if you’re using a letter-based logo. It must be legible. The logo must work and look good on all media, size and color spectrum. Your logo must pass the size test. Your logo should be clear when enlarge or decrease in size. Adding special effects like gradient and drop shadow not only adds a certain coolness to your logo, it also adds depth perception to something that’s normally seen flat. Without a color system, your logo will be a different color every time it is reproduced causing many headaches for the printer and you. Your logo should be able to reduce and increase in size and still be recognizable
A compelling, clean and consistent marketing campaign will always bring success. This is the branding mantra, never ignore it.

Identify your target audience
Written by admin on August 10, 2008 – 1:21 pm -Great web design can attract lots of visitors to your website, but it cannot influence the buying decision of the visitors because the website failed to address its message to its target audience. So it is crucial for a web designer to analyse the potential target market so they to whom the website will be communicating to.
You are trying to create a website to get an online presence and you want to attract visitors on the internet to know about you and your services. Thus it’s your responsibility to make the visitors understand the message website design is trying to communicate to them and what the website is all about. After some research about your target audience, the next step for a web design company is to define the other parts of the website development process. The contents, photos, sounds and videos that your target audience may appreciate are also to be considered. It is important you understand that you cannot communicate to everyone on the internet. For example if you are to create to shopping website for woman, you have to include pictures, contents and videos that will suit the market for girls and woman and not man.
So the web designer who will be responsible for the website design has to analyse the pros and cons of a particular web design initiative. The web designer has to take into consideration the target audience when doing his / her design works.
Website interactivity is possible when you have reached your target audience. To understand the views and their needs, interviews and surveys will help to pick up the insights. This will reduce issues of errors in the web design project. Marketing segmentation which helps you to arrive in desired web design are as follows:
Age group : Clearly define the age group to whom you are willing to present your products and services.
Education : The educational background of your target audience will help you to come into the conclusion about the lucidity of the language to be used during website design process.
Technical knowledge : If you are dealing with technological products and services, then analyse the type of technological knowledge your end users possess. This will help you know about their strengths and abilities.
Graphical orientation : Knowing about the taste of customers will help you to arrive into the correct graphical orientation to drive sales to your website.
To conclude, by understanding the needs of the target people, it becomes much easy for the website designer to solve many question that come up during the web design process.

Understanding HTML for a Better Business
Written by admin on August 8, 2008 – 1:13 am -What Is HTML?
HTML or Hypertext Markup Language, is the predominant language in which most Internet web pages are based. HTML accomplishes a number of tasks via a web page, including describing the structure of text based information to be displayed within the page (font sizes, text colors and formats, etc.), providing a means for the user to interact with the site via web forms, and embedding images and other types media for display to the user.
When an HTML page is provided to a user’s web browser over the Internet, the web browser will “translate” the HTML code into the format that will be displayed to the user.
HTML is written in the form of labels (known as tags). Each tag includes an “open” tag and a “close” tag, and the text that is contained within the opening and closing tags. For example, text can be made bold by using the and tag pair, so that the following HTML code will display the bold text word “Hello” in the user’s web browser.
Hello
HTML pages can also incorporate or embed the code for one or more “scripting languages”, including JavaScript, PHP, CGI, and ASP.Net.
What Can HTML Do for Me?
HTML provides the basic structure for your website, so it’s the foundation for your business getting its message to customers and potential customers. When you understand the basic principles of HTML, you can begin to format your web pages to have a more unique and in- house appearance. Brand recognition is important in business, and a little HTML coding can change a template style web page into something that is unique and recognizable. In addition to displaying advertising copy, pictures, brochures and the like, you can also:
· Provide users with a feedback form to submit basic information to you through the website.
· Generate an email
· Offer a Guestbook
How Do I Learn HTML?
As you might suspect, there is a seemingly endless supply of web-based tutorials and instructional materials for learning about HTML. There are a number of Internet-based tutorials to get you started, and to instruct you on any particular detail or HTML feature that you’re interested in.
Another way to “learn” HTML is simply to create you website using a web-authoring program, and examine the HTML code behind it. We’ll talk about a few of the leading web-authoring programs later in this article.
Do I Need To Learn It?
Strictly speaking, you don’t need to become an HTML expert to build and administer your businesses website. Many of the most popular tools for website construction include powerful capabilities (including many that most websites may never utilize). As an added benefit, some of these programs are available at no cost.
Since the HTML that serves as the backbone of a website is basically just text, any text editor (including Microsoft’s Notepad) can be used to create a website. Even though writing HTML code directly in a text editor can eventually help you to better understand what’s going on “under the hood”, spending the time necessary to become a hardcore HTML coder might simply not be an option.
In contrast, there are also popular programs that make it much easier to create your website layout and design through graphical user interface. These programs do the heavy lifting, and will automatically assemble the HTML code based on the design you make.
Dreamweaver
Adobe’s Dreamweaver is one of the leading commercial web design software packages available today. Dreamweaver has a reputation within in the web design community as being very rich in features, and one that generates very “clean” or more standards-compliant code. (This means that, in theory, the Dreamweaver code should run more predictably on a broader range of web browsers.) Dreamweaver also has strong support for CSS, JavaScript, XML, and a variety of other functionalities that are commonly used on “higher end” websites. In addition, Dreamweaver has tight integration with Adobe’s other design programs, including Photoshop and Flash. This can be a time-saver if you are using (or decide to use) those other programs.
On the other hand, Dreamweaver is expensive, compared to other commercial options. In addition, many feel that because there are so many features and functions available in the program, it can be intimidating for new users and designers.
Expression Web
Microsoft’s Expression Web (the successor to the venerable FrontPage software) is Microsoft’s web authoring tool and is considered to be one of the leading web design tool available today.
Expression Web has many (if not most) of the same tools as are available in Dreamweaver, and boasts strong integration with Microsoft’s other design and infrastructure products, such as Visual Studio, SharePoint, and the Office suite of products. In addition, Expression Web’s menu structures and look-and-feel will be familiar to users of other Microsoft Office products, which can make it easier for those already accustomed to Microsoft products.
Note, however, that the source code that Expression Web generates is sometimes not as clean as that created by Dreamweaver (or coded directly into HTML using a simple text editor), so this may result in some problems (or at least some additional time required) if you decide to use Dreamweaver to modify a page that was created in Expression Web. In addition, some page elements (such as tables) can require additional work if created in one program and then edited in another.
Nvu
For those who want to create relatively simple websites, without some of the fancy features that are available with Dreamweaver and Expression Web might wish to consider the open source product Nvu. Nvu has a graphical user interface like Dreamweaver and Expression Web, and is very efficient at making much HTML coding easier and quicker. As an open source product, Nvu is free of charge, and relatively well supported by its user community.
Web-Based Programs and Templates
Finally, be aware that there are a number of web-based authoring programs (such as Homestead) and template services available. These options often require very little effort in terms of design and coding, and are generally available at very reasonable prices. Keep in mind, however, that because most templates are or have been available to other users, you might wind up with a design that is not unique, or doesn’t provide your website with a sufficiently distinct identity.
How to Move Forward
At the end of the day, any web authoring tool is likely to have both have pluses and minuses. Before committing to license any particular package, take a little time to try any available online or downloadable trial versions of the package. The key to deciding is to identify your current and future needs, and balance this against your budget for the project. While choosing a particular tool won’t forever tie you to using that same tool in the future, making a thoughtful decision at the outset can help you to avoid spending time making corrections and adjustments down the road.
In closing, if you’d rather NOT learn HTML or just find it too confusing but still need it to help you with your business you should check out MemberSpeed software solution.

Web Design – Five Top Tips for a More Effective Website
Written by admin on August 4, 2008 – 10:27 am -Designing and launching a website requires a great deal of thought, consideration, and planning if you want the end result to be attractive and useful for site visitors. Here are five top tips for staying focused on creating the most effective website possible:
Tip #1 – Choose the layout carefully. It’s tempting to “dress up” your website layout with lots of different components just for the novelty of having a ‘cool’ website. The problem is that this kind of complicated design is not very user friendly and can actually cause visitors to leave the site out of frustration or confusion. Instead, stick with a simple design, free of excess clutter like lots of images, extensive menus, or too much content. Your primary goal is to make it easy for visitors to see valuable content and quickly identify what your website is all about.
Tip #2 – Make navigation easy. Look at your navigation menus and sections from the perspective of visitors, for the purpose of making it easy to navigate the site. Homepage navigation links to top level categories should be clear and easy to find, and within each category page there should be clear links to the pages within that topic. Also, use link bread-crumbs throughout the site (e.g. Home -> Category -> Topic -> Sub-topic); this makes it easy for visitors to always know where they are on the site and quickly go back to higher level pages or categories if they so choose.
Tip #3 – Choose comfortable colours. Once again, look at your website from the visitor’s perspective when choosing colours; all colours should be easy to look at and attractive rather than “in-your-face” bold and brilliant. Lean toward natural colour tones whenever possible because these create a feeling of warmth, pleasantness, and comfort. Be sure also that all links and content are distinguishable and easy to read; avoid any colours that will cause strain on the eyes or over stimulate the brain when looked at for an extended period of time.
Tip #4 – Make it user-focused. We just can’t say this often enough because it’s so incredibly important: an effective website absolutely must be user-focused and designed to meet the needs of website visitors. Check that all links and functions work properly, and quickly fix any that have gone astray or are causing errors. Take a good hard look at the functions themselves, eliminating any that make your website run slower or put visitors through unnessary effort, and keeping only those that make your website easier or more convenient to use, or at least have no visible effect. Your goal is to create a website visitors will find usable and trustworthy so they will be enticed to take action and to return in the future.
Tip #5 – Split test for effectiveness. This is perhaps the most valuable action you can take to fine tune your website and improve its performance. You can split test anything from textual content to images to homepage layout to the colour of headings and more, helping to identify those areas of the site that are effective and those that need some changes to become better. It’s especially beneficial when first launching a website but is also a good tool to use periodically to ensure maximum ongoing performance as well.
While these are major points to consider when designing a website that will perform well, there are many different aspects of a website that can affect visitor experience and conversions. Frequently review your website’s effectiveness and continue to educate yourself in the best practices of web design.

How To Build A successful Hosting Company
Written by admin on August 2, 2008 – 11:55 pm -There are a couple of key things to look at when starting a hosting company. Basically there are four major factors to look at provided you have the servers, and technical abilities.
1. Site design is the first thing a prospective customer sees I have seen some horrible designs for hosting companies. If you think putting some text, links and a logo on a page is enough, you will likely fail before you even realize. You will also notice a lot of companies have a generic template that can be found online at template monster or any other temple site. Avoid these. It is very hard to develop a company image when you look like 134,000 other hosting companies. I suggest put a bit of effort and creativity into a well designed professional looking home page for your company. The bottom line is a new customer will not even consider you as their host if they feel you are an armature no matter how great or cheap your packages are.
2. Develop your website as a total package to its clients. Do not just present your hosting packages and leave it at that. Offer tutorials, articles, support forums etc. These additional services not only provide additional content for you clients, but if developed correctly will bring additional traffic to your site which will potentially lead to more sales.
3 You MUST understand how search engines work. Over 90 of your business will likely come directly from search engine results. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to optimize your site for search engines. You could have the greatest hosting plan in the entire world, but if no one knows about it, then it is useless. Do a search on Google for Search Engine Optimization SEO. You will find tons of great information on how to create a website that is both user friendly and search engine friendly. There are also a countless number of companies out there who offer SEO services. Just be cautious of their offers and do your research first
3. Find your niche. The hosting business as a whole is a huge industry which is very competitive. Your best chance at success is to simply find a market and develop your business to cater to that specific niche. An excellent example of this is http elite hosts.org who offer hosting and development to those who operate online forums.
Maybe in the early 90s the idea of if you build it they will come might have been true. But in the year 2005 the internet is a far more competitive and complex. place To be successful today, you have to develop a business plan which works from all angles. If you can develop a hosting company which has a professional design, some extra content, search engine friendly and which targets a specific niche, you will have a far greater chance at success Of course there are many other factors to consider as well, but if you can master these four, everything else should fall into place.
