Web Development
Written by admin on October 29, 2008 – 1:59 am -Web development is a broad term for any activities related to developing a web site for the World Wide Web or an intranet. This can include e-commerce business development, web design, web content development, client-side/server-side coding, and web server configuration. However, among web professionals, “web development” usually refers only to the non-design aspects of building web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network services.
For larger businesses and organizations, web development teams can consist of hundreds of people (web developers). Smaller organizations may only require a single permanent or contracting webmaster, or secondary assignment to related job positions such as a graphic designer and/or Information systems technician. Web development may be a collaborative effort between departments rather than the domain of a designated department.
Since the mid-1990s, web development has been one of the fastest growing industries in the world. In 1995 there were fewer than 1,000 web development companies in the United States alone, but by 2005 there were over 30,000 such companies.[1][citation needed] The web development industry is expected to grow over 20% by 2010. The growth of this industry is being pushed by large businesses wishing to sell products and services to their customers and to automate business workflow, as well as the growth of many small web design and development companies.
In addition, cost of Web site development and hosting has dropped dramatically during this time. Instead of costing tens of thousands of dollars, as was the case for early websites, one can now develop a simple web site for less than a thousand dollars, depending on the complexity and amount of content.[citation needed] Smaller Web site development companies are now able to make web design accessible to both smaller companies and individuals further fueling the growth of the web development industry. As far as web development tools and platforms are concerned, there are many systems available to the public free of charge to aid in development. A popular example is the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), which is usually distributed free of charge. This fact alone has manifested into many people around the globe setting up new Web sites daily and thus contributing to increase in web development popularity. Another contributing factor has been the rise of easy to use WYSIWYG web development software, most prominently Adobe Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression Studio (formerly Microsoft Frontpage) . Using such software, virtually anyone can develop a Web page in a matter of minutes. Knowledge of HyperText Markup Language (HTML), or other programming languages is not required, but recommended for professional results.
The next generation of web development tools uses the strong growth in LAMP and Microsoft .NET technologies to provide the Web as a way to run applications online. Web developers now help to deliver applications as Web services which were traditionally only available as applications on a desk based computer.
Instead of running executable code on a local computer, users are interacting with online applications to create new content. This has created new methods in communication and allowed for many opportunities to decentralize information and media distribution. Users are now able to interact with applications from many locations, instead of being tied to a specific workstation for their application environment.
Examples of dramatic transformation in communication and commerce led by web development include e-commerce. Online auction sites such as eBay have changed the way consumers consume and purchase goods and services. Online resellers such as Amazon.com and Buy.com (among many, many others) have transformed the shopping and bargain hunting experience for many consumers. Another good example of transformative communication led by web development is the blog. Web applications such as WordPress and b2evolution have created easily implemented blog environments for individual Web sites. Open source content systems such as Typo3, Xoops, Joomla!, and Drupal have extended web development into new modes of interaction and communication.

Checklist for a Successful Website
Written by admin on October 20, 2008 – 4:22 pm -Have you just completed designing website for your company or your business ? Have you just redesigned your website ? If yes, than are you sure that your website is going to acheive all the purposes that it has been set out for ? Are you sure your website is going to be successful ? Are you sure that potential customers can find your website in top rankings on various search engines ?
Web Designing technologies, application and development change so rapidly nowadays that the site you developed just a few months back might be outdated as of now, and with the technological changes in web designing your website might seem obsolete. Here are a few points which you should consider while designing a website to make your website a successful one which will get potenial customers and rank higher on a search engine.
Is your website Compatible ?
Your website should display correctly, in its intended form, shape & design to all the visitors of your website regardless of them using whatever computers, operating systems, browsers and monitor resolution. You will have to make sure that the website displays correctly to all the users. Some websites need some plugins or players to display the content – if that is the case with your website than a download link for such plugins and players should be provided, so that the users who do not have such plugins or players can download it instantly and view your content. If possible, you can lso provide a guide on how to install such plugins or players on different page on your website.
If your website Complete ?
NONE, repeat, None of the web pages on your website should be under construction. Usually, website designers develop a site over a period of time, and in most cases your websitee will never be truly completed, but for that you should not leave your website or a web page under construction. If you do not have the content or information to be put up on a page —- then do not put that page on the website now —- you can do that later when you have the information or content — but do not put up a under construction page.
Does your website have relevant content ?
You need to keep a watchful eye on the content that is being published on your website. Legal & technical implications apart — the content on your website has several other implications on the search engine rankings. Make sure that you have relevant content for all your pages like Home Page, About us page, products page, services page, Contact page etc. All the information mentioned should have been created or developed by you or the web designer. Is the information on your website relevant, accurate, complete and current ? Do a watchful query on whether the content on your website is original and not copied from some other sources or website. Duplicate content will not help your website to acheive top rankings in search engines.
The content on your website should be checked for the correctness of spelling, typos and incorrect grammar.
What is Graphics to Text ratio on your website ?
A graphics effect or image or a flash effect is meant to attract the visitors of your website, but it should not be overdone to such an extent that the visitor gets involved in the graphics and forgets about the sales message of your website. At the same time, your website should also not look poor in the terms of graphics. So, the key word here is ‘balance’, there shuld be a right mix of text content and graphics on your website. If your website has more graphics and text, it will be very difficult to get higher search engine rankings. The ideal text to graphics ration on your website should be 80:20, that is to say 80% should be text and 20% should be graphics/images.
Is your website Interactive ?
We all like something that involves us, that is to say we like something wherein we can also participate, meaning we all like interactivity. Now, consider the same for your website. Is your website interactive ? Does the visitor of your website feel included as a part of your website ? If you can do this, than half the battle is won. You have been able to make the visitor a part of your website and thats a good thing for search engine promotion. You can include many components and small snippets which can make your website interactive like adding a message board, comments, mailing list, polls etc. You can also add a blog to your website where you can publish articles or your thoughts or news from the industry, which will make yuor website interactive and it will also tempt the visitors to come to your site often.
What is the link structure of your website ?
Thoroughly check all the links on your website. The links should all be pointing to their correct intended pages, there should be a clear heirarchy of links, and all of the links should be working. There should not even a single broken link. If you are linking to an external website, check often the correctness of the links as that might change over a peiod of time. If you have dead links on yorur website, edit them or remove them immediately as that might frustrate your visitors.
How fast does your website load ?
Check your website with different internet connections and gauge the speed at which your website loads. Ideally your website shuold load within the first 8 seconds, because that is the average attention span of the internet surfers around the world. If you fail to present your website or yourself within the first 8 seconds than probably you have lost a potential customer. The website loading speed depends on various factors, ofcourse first of it being the internet connection speed of the visitor, amount of graphics on your website, the web server that you are hosted on and the bandwidth of your web server. Graphics take up a lot of time to load, hence graphics should be use at those places where absolutely necessary.
Choose your web host who can provide your good bandwidth and almost 99% uptime of your website, because you do not want your website to be down when a potential customer visits your website.
Is it easy to navigate your website ?
Your website contains information, about your company and products or services. But, pay attention to the question, Is it easy to find information on your website ? Do you have the mandatory pages like home, about us, products, services, contacts etc. The home page or the index page which is the first one which loads should contain links to all the other pages on your website. The links should be presented in a logical presentation, in such a way that all the information is presented to the web site visitor at a glance.
How many Incoming links does your website have ?
It is very important that your website be referred through other websites or blogs related to your industry. Search engines depend on links from other websites to your website to include your website in their index. The more incoming links for your website that you have — the better. The more RELATED links your website has from related websites – the best. It is to say that if you have a business of manufacturing exercise notebook manufacturing machinery — then getting a link from a fashion website would server no purpose while getting a link from a notebook manufacturers website will be considered in high regard by the search engines.
Is your website optimized for Search engine promotion ?
Your website should be optimized for search engine promotion, it should rank higher for important keywords in major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN Live, Altavista etc. Also make sure that you make optimum use of title, keyword and description tags. Make usre that the keywords and description you mention are relevant and contain your keywords. Also take note that your important keywords should be included in the description mentioned on the website.
What is the style of your website ?
Each website has its own distinct style and makes its own statement. What style does your website have ? What statement does your website male. Is it enhancing your company image ? Does it define your business goals. Is it user friendly ? How does your website fare with your competitors website ? The look and feel of your website should be easy going, attractive and friendly so that reflects your corporate image and helps build business. If your site does not have have this, than probably its time for redesigning of website.
Is your website usable ?
Website being usable identifies with the fact how easily your website visitors can make use of your website. The best way to know this is to get feedback from the visitors. If there are complaints, comments or questions from your website visitors than you should change your website according to that. Remember one thing, you are not making website for yourself, but for visitors and potential customers — hence a website should be made according to what they like.

Mobile Web Design Resources for Non-Designers
Written by admin on October 18, 2008 – 8:25 pm -More and more, people are using their mobile phones and other mobile, web-enabled devices to stay connected. Having a mobile-optimized website is thus a great advantage if you’re hoping to reach a larger, increasingly mobilized audience. While many of today’s mobile browser have the ability to display “full” sites, creating sites that cater to smaller screens and have features that make use of the various functionalities specific to mobile devices (functionalities such as touch screens, address books and geolocation) will add value to your site and make it easier and more rewarding for mobile users to browse through.
So how do you go about “mobilizing” your website if you have no mobile web design experience? Just a few years ago, optimizing a site for mobile browsers used to be a huge hassle, a process that was made even more difficult by the fact that many mobile browsers had very limited capabilities. Today, however, optimizing your site for mobile platforms is a lot easier. With the widespread use of WebKit, which powers the browsers of iPhones, Android and BlackBerry devices, even those of us with now mobile web design experience can optimize sites to be compatible with mobile web devices. Here are a few useful mobile web development resources to check out. If you need help using these tools, simply contact a great San Diego search engine optimization and web design company.

Website Design Northern Ireland Criteria for an effective Website
Written by admin on October 15, 2008 – 3:34 am -To develop an effective Website it is essential to adhere to a set of established criteria that have historically been successful in promoting sites to the highest rankings in the Internet Search Engines and accomplishing client’s marketing expectations. Website Design Northern Ireland can fulfil the criteria in creating professional Website applications.
Project Planning
The first step in Website development is project planning. This is basically a meeting of minds between the Web Company project manager and the customer to tease out the requirements of the Website based on the expectations of the customer. This lays the foundation stones and parameters upon which the Website can be developed. The Project Manager needs to know the raison deter of the client Company, their business operation and their expectations of a Website application. It will be subject to this briefing that a design brief can be issued to the design team. Website Design Northern Ireland is well versed in providing this service.
Design Stage
It is only when a detailed design brief is available that the designers can liaise with the Project Manager and begins to draw up design templates for the client’s perusal. Upon receipt of sample designs the client can consider possible changes to or acceptance of such designs. The Website Design Northern Ireland Company will be as flexible as possible in resolving any design glitches and through a process of discussion and negotiation an acceptable resolution will be reached. This stage is extremely important and must reflect exactly what the customer requires for their marketing campaign. Coding can only begin when both parties are completely satisfied with design sign off. To do so prematurely would only lead to greater problems at the coding stage where design changes could set the project back some time and incur extra charges.
Website content collation
As we have already discovered the coding cannot begin until all the required content is received from the client. This is usually the stumbling block to a timetabled project completion date as clients often procrastinate in collating the information and forwarding it to the Website developer. Sometimes copywriting is the only answer to this problem but without some basic information even this cannot resolve delays. When the complete content is available and the design has been signed off the Coders can then set to work on web programming the application. The only problem at this point could be incongruities or anomalies in the site content that is detected in the course of coding. This can be resolved through liaison with the client’s IT or Management personnel. If it is an E-Commerce application then there are other considerations for the Coders such as on line payment. This does not usually cause great problems.
Website Testing
The only criteria left to be fulfilled are the Website trial. Once this is accomplished successfully then the Website can go live.

You want your website to be very attractive the search engines so they will give you a top 10 rankings in their search results. These search engines send out crawlers that look around for new websites and old websites. They determine what your website is about, how many other web sites think you are credible and then they use an algorithm to determine where you should rank. From here, they are able to rank your site appropriately where they believe you should be placed within their search engine results.

Joining Facebook – A Great Way to Increase Website Traffic
Written by admin on October 8, 2008 – 2:36 pm -Most companies today come with an online presence. Having dedicated web sites is very much necessary to tap the growing market segment that makes transactions online. However, for people to buy from a particular website, they have to know about its existence. And for that, the companies need to have effective Internet marketing policies and search engine optimization techniques in place to drive targeted audience to their web sites. The idea is to convert a growing percentage of the visitors to various e-commerce sites into customers. However, sometimes the tried and tested means of Internet marketing and web site design might not be enough. This is the time when you would want to think “out of the box.” One such “different” approach to ensure that there is more “relevant” traffic to your website is the use of social networking sites such as Facebook.
For the people who do not know, Facebook is a social networking site through which a person can keep in touch with friends, acquaintances, and family members. He can also use this forum to meet new people.
An individual could use this medium to promote his business. After all, it is common knowledge that people like to do business with others they know. And if the individual can make himself known to other members of Facebook, he can also sell his products and ideas to them.
An individual could be a part of a Facebook group with others who are interested in certain areas that are related to his business or e-commerce initiative. These are the people who are most likely to be interested in what is offered by the company in question. How can one search for such a group? All that a person would need to do is think of a topic that people in the market for his products or services would be interested in. He can then search for groups related to the same. Being a part of such a group is always beneficial, as the members can interact with one another and get to know about their businesses and e-commerce initiatives. There would be many people in the group with an interest for what a particular company offers.
Individuals and business owners can also create some events to draw in the interested people to their Facebook accounts and ultimately to their web sites. An event could be anything from a product launch to organizing a special activity that a target market would be interested in. These events are perfect to generate publicity for the online businesses and increase web site traffic.
So, what does Facebook do? It acts as a forum for people to meet online. This forum can also be used to communicate with other individuals in any target market. The best way to go about it is to show genuine interest in other people. This way, they would see you as a person having some interesting traits and qualities and not as someone who is out to get his next prospective client. When you are genuine, they would also reciprocate by showing interest in you as well as in your business.
